Moab weekend scene

Weekend itinerary

A Moab weekend between sandstone fins and canyon rims.

Use Friday for Main Street and the river corridor, Saturday for one full park, and Sunday for the second park or one activity that fits the season, vehicle, and group.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Moab sits beside the Colorado River between Arches, Island in the Sky, slickrock trail systems, and three scenic road corridors.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights cover one full park and one shorter park or river block. Three or four nights make room for both parks plus biking, rafting, four-wheel driving, or a longer hike.

Stay

Hyatt Place Moab

A practical north-end hotel with a pool, quick access to the Arches road, and a short drive to central Moab…

Main activity

Arches, Canyonlands, and the Colorado River

The Needles district is not a quick extension of Island in the Sky. It lies south of Moab and requires a separate long day with trail and road conditions checked first.

Weekend shape

One park per day

Begin exposed hikes around sunrise in warm months, avoid crossing town repeatedly, and leave one afternoon flexible for wind, heat, storms, or river conditions.

Friday

Friday, 4–9 p.m.: Main Street and the Colorado River corridor.

Check in, confirm park alerts and current entry guidance, then walk central Moab or drive UT-128 only as far as daylight allows. Keep the first evening out of technical terrain.

Saturday

Saturday, sunrise–late afternoon: one national-park day.

At Arches, combine Windows, Balanced Rock, and one longer trail. At Island in the Sky, link Mesa Arch, Green River Overlook, and open rim stops. Through October 1, 2026, Grand View Point is open Friday through Sunday only, with limited parking.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to shade, the river, or town during peak heat.

When exposed slickrock becomes too hot, use a pool break, museum stop, shaded meal, or easy river-corridor drive for the afternoon.

Sunday

Sunday: the second park or one chosen adventure.

Use the final day for a shorter park circuit, a guided river trip, a skill-matched bike ride, or a permitted four-wheel-drive route before the departure road.

The weekend in three scenes

Sandstone forms, canyon rims, and one chosen adventure

Arches at first light

Arches at first light

Use the cool morning for exposed slickrock, then connect shorter roadside formations without racing the park road.

Island in the Sky

Island in the Sky

Mesa Arch is short; Green River Overlook and the drive between stops turn the district into a substantial half or full day. Through October 1, 2026, Grand View Point is open Friday through Sunday only, with limited parking.

River or trail finish

Choose a guided river trip, skill-matched bike ride, short hike, or scenic corridor according to season and departure time.
